Wonderful silk Eton jacket circa 1900s with great details!
You may have seen these short jackets referred to in catalogs and patterns of the era as "Eton jackets", but why?
Apparently it is a carryover from a style of boys' school uniform at Eton College in England, when younger students were made to wear short jackets and upperclassmen wore longer ones.
I have seen the terms bolero and Eton jacket used interchangeably, but I'm still not clear on the real distinction between the two. The bolero is modeled after the short jacket worn by a Spanish matador, but seems to appear quite similar.
This piece has hook and eye closures down the center front and is lined with silk satin. It has a little pocket inside!
+++ Measurements +++
Up to 42" bust
37" waist
14"-19" length
+++ Condition +++
Good overall condition with minor wear and one notable flaw: the silk taffeta lining in the sleeves is shattered. If replaced, this would be a wearable piece. Otherwise it is a great study, pattern-making, or display piece.
