This incredible purse comes from my personal collection. It is extremely finely made and features solid silver hardware set with real gemstones, an attached pencil and beautiful snake clasp.
Signed by Maquet, a company founded in 1841 that patented a machine for making first machine-made envelopes and sold fine stationery, but later branched out into luxury leather goods. In my research I discovered that Audrey Hepburn owned some leather handbags from this company that sold at auction.
From the Wikipedia article on the company:
"One of the most renowned Parisian luxury houses, Maison Maquet became official purveyor to Empress Eugénie as well as to several royal courts, winning multiple awards and medals at various World's fairs over the course of its history."
I believe this piece dates from the early 1900s. It does not appear to have ever been used.
