Victorian Silver Witch's Heart Crescent Moon Brooch

Witch's hearts were originally worn as protection from evil spirits, but eventually became a symbol of love and affection in the 18th century, signifying that the gifter had been "bewitched" by love. ⁣

These uniquely beautiful hearts often (but not always) are recognizable by a curve to the "tail," some of which were more subtle (like this one) and others having a more exaggerated curve. These hearts were also usually topped with a crown to symbolize loyalty.⁣

Witch's heart brooches became especially popular in Scotland where they were called "Luckenbooths," named after the stalls in Edinburgh where they were sold. ⁣

While a single Luckenbooth is said to symbolize affection, a double Luckenbooth is a sign of true commitment. Fans of the Outlander show (minor spoiler) will remember that Murtagh gave a double Luckenbooth brooch to Jocasta. ⁣

This incredible Victorian brooch is made of 900 silver and set with paste stones. The design is very unique, a crescent moon threaded through a witch's heart topped with a star! In Victorian jewelry, moons were a symbol of femininity and the moon goddess, while stars were often seem as a symbol of guidance. ⁣
