Gorgeous locket in 9k gold circa 1840s. Includes a daguerreotype photograph of a young man inside behind thick, beveled glass.
When I purchased this piece, I removed carefully the photograph from the frame to see if there were any identifying notes (or even a lock of hair!). While I did not find the type of note I was looking for, I did find another kind of note...a piece of very old money!
It seems as though someone cut out a very old four dollar banknote, possibly by the Colonial Bank of Canada, and used it to back the daguerreotype. I have found some interesting things in lockets, but this is a first for me. Pretty neat!
Chain shown in some of the photos is not included in this listing. Listing is for the locket only.
+++ Measurements +++
1 3/4 diameter
5/8" bail
+++ Condition +++
Lovely condition with minor age-related wear, some very tiny dents, barely visible. The daguerreotype shows signs of wear and is very faded. It is quite difficult to see at certain angles. Locket closes securely.
