Vulcanite is a material made of vulcanized (hardened) rubber. It became quite popular in the Victorian era as an affordable, durable material for black mourning jewelry, an alternative to more expensive materials like jet.
This piece is a very lovely locket with a beautiful gold decoration on the front which has some black enamel embellishments. It was likely a mourning piece.
The inside has beautiful detailing and a place to hold a photograph or a lock of hair.

It is in really nice condition for its age, with some minor signs of wear, very faint surface scratches, but overall excellent. There is very minor color fading.
NOTE: The color of vulcanite can fade over time, especially with direct sun exposure. It will turn a lighter brownish green if not kept out of the sun.
