Victorian Vulcanite 14k Gold Demi Parure | Antique Jewelry Set

Fantastic Victorian vulcanite demi parure consisting of earrings and a brooch circa mid-late 19th century.

Vulcanite was an early thermoplastic (a material that is moldable when heated and solid when it cools) made from vulcanized rubber. It was popular in jewelry and often used to mimic Whitby jet, although it tends to have a slightly greenish hue as it ages and is exposed to the sun. Best kept out of direct sunlight.

Earrings measure 2" with an additional 3/8" drop from the ear wire

Brooch measures 2 1/16" x 15/16"

+++ Condition +++

Lovely condition overall with some minor age-related wear and notable details:

• Some general fading to the vulcanite, mostly on the front of the brooch
• The set has been modernized somewhat -- a safety clasp has been added to the brooch in place of the original c-clasp, and new ear wires have been added, securely affixed with some type of epoxy, as shown in the photos
• There appears to have been some kind of drop pendants or perhaps other adornments affixed to the bottom of the brooch, which are no longer present. This is only visible when inspecting it closely. See photos.
