An incredible and extremely rare trench art match safe dated 1916 from World War I with an important message inscribed on it...
Strike a Light But NOT at Night
At the bottom, there is an image of a skull and crossbones with the date 1916.
The message serves as a warning: you may strike a match, but beware not to do so at night, when you may be spotted by enemy forces, therefore giving away your location and risking your life and the lives of your fellow soldiers in the trenches.
It appears to have been made using dominoes, which I believe were made of bone. It is a really wonderful piece of history and craftsmanship. The carving is very fine, as is the lettering.

Lovely condition overall for its age, with minor signs of age-related wear. The hinged top is nice and snug and works great.
